A karaoke machine will assist a musician of any age or ability level to play better, with practice.
By practicing with a CD, a musician can master songs more quickly than without a recording, and test his/her level of achievement.
If a karaoke machine has tempo control, a singer may perform at a chosen tempo.
If a karaoke machine has a control for pitch, a singer may perform in his/her vocal range; or if using sheet music and an instrument, will be able to perform in the sheet music’s key while reading musical notation.
To know what is to be most desired from a karaoke machine, a singer must visualize the tasks to be performed, and ways a karaoke machine could assist during a performance. These 4 stories might assist in picturing how the singer might be helped.
Coach Surprised – Student Corrects Pitch (Sorry, not a sports story)
As a student violinist, I once tried out for an advanced music class. The teacher thought about not admitting me when he found I performed “out of tune.”
I played intensively with a CD for 6 weeks.
After the recital, my teacher stated it was unusual that I had corrected my pitch problem, and successfully performed a challenging piece, as well. But it had not only been pitch accuracy that I absorbed from practicing with a recording. The CD example had taught me to play at a specific tempo, and trying to achieve a certain quality of tone and a certain style of phrasing I could not glean from the musical notation alone.
Before obtaining the CD, my interpretation was uncertain, and my tone undeveloped. The CD offered insight. It was the teacher at my side.
Piano Student “Practices” while Washing Dishes
Knowing the rewards of practicing with a CD, I taught an older beginner piano student who hoped to achieve a more classical musical education than many “older beginner” piano books provide for. I suggested that she supplement the “adult short course” piano books with Shinichi Suzuki’s piano course targeting children. (Suzuki’s graded piano books and recordings have been developed for many instruments.)
Suzuki emphasized that emphasis on a good tone is fundamental to a successful musical education. Because tone cannot be seen in musical notation, Suzuki created a series of CDs to be studied along with the reading of musical notation. He selected repertoire with the objective of building musicianship gradually, step-by-step. It is required that a student listen to the CD as part of study of each piece, and that a student learn pieces in the order presented.
My piano student listened in the process of performing housework, and practiced while reading musical notation when she was free to do so. While she didn’t have much time, the time she had was put to use.
The result was steady progress and became proficient over time. She did not lose interest, due to the beauty of the pieces, and was able to play well because she could hear the beautiful tone which made the music come alive. Of course, it helped to believe that if children could play the songs well, so could she.
In addition to fostering a good performance by providing a recorded example, a karaoke machine can foster creativity if it has the ability to alter three musical attributes: pitch, tempo, and tone. These three elements allow a musician to really interpret a musical selection and adapt the song to his/her personality, voice, or ability level, so that music may occur naturally.
Soprano Can’t Hit Notes, Won’t Sing
As a younger singer in a choral group, I had a soprano voice, and so sang soprano. However, I could not hit the really high notes, which resulted in my feeling dismay and insufficiency as a singer.
My musical inclination tended towards playing instruments. My small singing range deficiency proved determinative in the choice of musical goals.
As a sometime composer of vocal music, I pay close attention to keeping vocal parts within a standard vocal range, and provide for vocal warm-up when leading up to more difficult vocal passages.
Shy Musician Able To Perform by Simple Change of Tempo
For some reason, I had an aversion to the song My Melancholy Baby (Burnett and Norton) until I heard a rendition by Diane Keaton in Woody Allen’s film, Annie Hall. The distinctive feature that riveted me to the performance was the slowness of her rendition, which allowed her to develop depth of tone and mood.
It broke the performance ice for me.After that experience, if called upon to participate as a musician in a family setting, where I might not really like the repertoire available, a simple change of tempo can free up the performance from a prescribed style and adapt it to my capability and taste.
A video included with this essay examines how a singer can use a basic karaoke machine to experience benefits available with controls built into a more capable karaoke machine.
Karaoke musicians should note that tempo control is an unusual feature in karaoke, and tends to be on more expensive karaoke machines. A TASCAM trainer, found at www.MusicStudioStore.com, will provide tempo control affordably. In general, tempo control should be digital, so as not to alter pitch.
In choosing a karaoke machine, a basic karaoke machine will often be appropriate. As karaoke singers develop in musical ability, karaoke machines with more controls may be preferred. A singer should be aware of the potential importance of pitch control, and the creative potential of variable tempo in a karaoke machine.
At GoKaraokeMachine.com, we offer affordable karaoke machines for home and club and system components which may include variable tempo and pitch control. Our sister site at MusicStudioStore.com brings instruments into the karaoke mix by offering Sheet Music with CDs and TASCAM trainers. Enjoy exploring our sites.
